Eye Stye

21 Nov 2012 - 33 mths plus (2yrs and 9mths)

Claire had her first eye stye at abt 2yrs old. It did not develope into anything serious at that time. The eye stye subsided when we gave her a few feeds of barley water.

About 4 months ago in Aug 2012, she has her 2nd eye stye on her left upper eye lid. This time round, it was really big and swollen. So big that u can see the pus in it. As per advise by the elderly, we tried to squeeze out the pus from the affect eye. We tried various method, using clean fingers or clean needle (PLEASE do not try this!), Claire was screaming and crying hard when we pinned her down. It was heart-aching for us, but we thought it will make the bump smaller and disappear.

In Sep 2012, we decided to bring her to see PD. He prescribed Fucithalmic.

In Oct 2012, the bump is still there, thus we brought her to see an eye specialist at KKH. The eye specialist gave us two options, (1) Apply a stronger medicine (2) Go for surgery. If we choose option (2), that will mean she has to be on GA before the doctor can perform surgery. We couldn't bear to, therefore we opted for option (1), so he prescribed TobraDex.

In Nov 2012, the bump on the left eye finally subsided, but there is a scar, and what's worst, she has 2 new eye styes on the right upper eye lid. We went back to the eye specialist, this time round he prescribed MAXITROL for the scar and Fucithalmic for the new eye styes. And the next review will be in 3 weeks time.

We have tried various ways hoping her eye styes will disappear:
- Keep her hands clean
- Warm compress on the eye for abt 10 mins before applying medicine
- Drink barley water
- Eat pearl powder
- Pray at the temples
- Clean her eyes with chinese tea
- Tie black string on her middle finger

If you have other methods, please leave your comments.

Jigsaw Puzzle

17 Aug 2012 - 30 mths plus

We exposed her to jigsaw puzzle at about 20 mths old, all these while she needs our help in putting the puzzle together. At 28 mth, we suddenly realize she no longer needs our help, she can complete it all alone.

We always leave the puzzle in the living room, whenever we reach home, she will take off her shoes and go straight to the puzzle!

Leap Frog Learning DVD

15 Aug 2012 - 30mths

We had put XX in zoophonics weekly class for about 3 to 4 mths, and one fine day, I decided to pull her out of the class.

Zoophonics is good, love the way they teach phonics with animals. But they teached the same songs for 3 mths, of cos that's good for the child to learn and memorize the songs. But I just find it a bit too bored to keep learning same old stuffs.

Initially wanted to DIY phonics flash cards so that she can continue to learn at home, but im just plain lazy.
Luckily cousin Ann recommended leap frog learning DVD 'letter factory'. It is good! Teaches how to produce the sounds in a fun way.

I got it from Singapore motherhood forum, about SGD 45, which is inclusive of 3 DVDs, a set of alphabet flash cards and courier charges. Ntuc is selling per disc at about SGD 18.90.

Nose bleed

1 May 2012 - 26 mths plus

XX is only 2 yrs old and she has already experienced nose bleeding for about 6 or 7 times.

The few reasons we suspect for nose bleeding:
1) She LOVES to dig her nose
2) Her mucus is always dry and hard bcos we slp in air-conditioned room
3) She is Heaty

One of the niece also has the nose bleeding problem. She went thru numerous test and scans and found nothing and PD prescribed a sea salt nasal spray.

So instead of going to to PD, hubby suggested we try out the nasal spray first. I got mine from Guardian at $13.90 (blue packaging).

We had tried the nasal spray for a week now. After the spray, the water will fluidify the mucus and the mucus will flow out when the little one blows the nose. We do this once everyday.

Lesson at Zoophonics (4th week)

1 May 2012 - 26 mths plus

4th week of lesson and XX is finally accepting the teacher! Willing to go up to the teacher and give her a hug at the end of the lesson!

All along I thought she is not doing good at phonics, but I got a surprise at her 4th lesson. She was able to follow the teacher for at least 18 to 20 alphabets. Think she was memorizing all the phonics during the 1st 3 lessons and unleashing her talent only recently. :)

Lesson @ Zoophonics

14 Apr 2012 - 26 mths old

Today is XX's 2nd lesson at zoophonics (Thomson branch). I got a shock when I saw the number of students and parents in the class. There's total of 9 toddlers plus 9 mommies/daddies/helpers and 1 teacher, which adds up to 19 pple in the same room. Last week there were only 5 toddlers plus parents. With such crowd, it's pretty understandable when everything gets a little bit out of control..

Now let's summarize what XX had done in school today:

1) greeted by teacher at the entrance
2) washed our hands with sanitizer
3) gave out props for the singing session
4) started the class with 3 songs (they uses the songs as last week, probably to let the toddlers remember the songs)
5) bubbles time (XX's favorite! The teacher will blow bubbles and toddlers will "catch" the bubble. )
6) phonics time
7) story telling time
8) hands-on activity base on the story told
9) art and craft time
10) one last song to end the English class
11)
12)

To continue...

Hello Panda

31 Jan 2012 - 23 mths plus

I was washing plates in the kitchen, as usual, XX opened the tidbits cabinet, said "我要吃这个", and i din even bother to look at her, i just replied "不可以".

We had 2 boxes of Hello Panda in the tidbits compartment, those kind whereby there are 10 packets in each box. Both boxes were half filled. When i turned around to look at her, she transferred all the packets in one box to another, and den threw away the empty box into the dustbin, ALL by herself.

Kicking the pacifier habit

29 Jan 2012 - 23 mths plus

For those who are looking at this post, and has a child who still is still using pacifier, pls pls pls kick your child's habit as early as possible.

The reason why i decided to stop xx from using pacifier is because she has been relying too much on it. Whenever she gets into our car, she will ask for pacifier even though it's not her napping time.

So what we did..

We let her used the cut pacifer (Picture below) for about 1 week. She is totally clueless on what's going on.

On her first day - i cut a very small hole at the bottom of the pacifier teat, i tried it, still works like a normal pacifier.

2nd day - i cut the top of the pacifier teat ( Picture below), this time round, i tried and it is a totally "Lou Fong" pacifier. XX was puzzled, but she merely took out the pacifier, took a 2nd look at it, and put back into her mouth.. lol..

Warning, when using this method, meaning ur child will be sucking in air, so if you are not comfortable, please do not use this method.

On the 5th day - i cut it even shorter, so short until she had problem keeping the pacifier in the mouth. When she was not lying down on the bed, meaning sitting up right or standing, the pacifer will drop out.

On the 8th day - Daddy cut it REAL short, totally impossible to use it. On our way out, we hold on to the pacifer, asked her to throw into the dustbin bcos it's too short, she refused at first, but after a while, she volunteered to throw, so while we were walking to the carpark, she threw it into the carpark's dustbin.

20 Jan 2012 is the date that she threw her pacifier away!! After that day, she still ask for pacifier, but all we have to do is to remind her that she threw away the pacifier into the dustbin, den she had no choice but to bear with it.

The process is not easy. She tossed and cried during nap and sleeping time. But we know it is a matter of time to go through this, so we just had to endure with it.

Updates

21 Jan 2012 - 23 mths plus

Had been a while since i last blogged. There are just too many things to update.

Let me just list down those that i can remember.. =)

  • She is a Parrot! She can repeat whatever you say. Maximum 4 syllabus, anything more that that she will go bla bla bla..
  • She will retaliate. When i am angry and shout at her, she will shout "AHH!!" at me.
  • She has been rated as a toddler who is consider fast for her speech development.
  • She can hold / strike a conversation with you.
          XX: 妈咪,我要吃这个chocolate。
          Me: Cannot
          XX: 我要我要!

As CNY is nearing, i have coached her to say "Gong Xi Gong Xi" and "Gong Xi Fa Cai".. Although her pronounciation is not that accurate, but everyone who have heard her were amused. =)

During her last doctor appointment, the PD said xx is underweight. Oh well.. that was quite expected, bcos her solid food intake is not that much. For those who have underweight kids, probably can try this method if u are comfortable. Add cereal into the toddler's milk twice a day, 1st and last feed. Our nephew who was skinny for the longest time of his life uses this method and we saw visible results in 4 months. XX started the cereal + milk diet about one week ago, let's hope we will see the difference in a few months time.. ^_^

A photo of the slim XX.
